Viterbo and Lake Bolsena

While in Tuscania we were able to travel to Viterbo and Lake Bolsena. Viterbo is a large city in the Lazio region  and is one of the best preserved medieval towns of central Italy.  The city is filled with historic buildings, palaces and beautiful churches.

Our academic advisor, Massimo gave us a tour of Viterbo in the Morning then brought us to Antica Tavern where we experienced a "real" 3+ course Italian meal. Primo corso or first course was an antipasti plate of bruschetta, olives, beans, prosciutto and tomatoes. Second was a homemade fettuccine pasta with a spicy pomodoro(tomato) sauce. Third was meat dishes served family style with chicken, pork, beef and sausages with potatoes and salad. For once, no one, not even the guys wanted desert.

As a group we had the option to decide what we wanted to do on Sunday. 30 kids and multiple options.. thankfully the weather played a major role in the decision making process. Our first few days in Tuscania cansisted of 90+ degrees temperatures and lots of walking. We learned that Lake Bolsena is only a 15min drive from Tuscania and decided to spend our free time there.

Lake Bolsena is a crater lake in central Italy. It is the largest lake of volcanic origin in Europe with two islands that were formed by underwater eruptions following the initial collaspse of the caldera.

A picture is worth a thousand words and the few that i took that day do not and could not capture of beautiful this area is! We spent the afternoon and until after sunset on the black sand beach, playing volleyball, relaxing and enjoying the view.
